Gemini Gems Migrate to Google's New Skills System on Nov 17

Google has announced that it will begin automatically migrating Gemini Gems to its new Skills system on November 17, 2026. The migration means existing Gems can still be used until they are moved, but users will need to check if their settings and shared links transfer over.

The new Skills model is designed for reuse across tasks, allowing users to call a Skill with a slash command or combine multiple Skills in one task. However, the notice does not specify what happens to attached files, default tools, or shared links during the migration process.

Current subscribers who use Google AI Pro or Ultra will be able to access Skills after the migration, but it is unclear if free users will gain access as well. The help page for Skills currently excludes certain regions, including the European Economic Area and Nigeria.
