Global AI Adoption Skews Towards Developed Economies
A new report by Goldman Sachs Research reveals that four countries - France, the US, the Netherlands, and the UK - are leading the global adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), with AI deployment rates ranging from 15-20% in these developed economies.
The research found that major emerging markets have adopted AI at a slower pace, with adoption rates between 10-15%. This disparity is reflected in job openings, which slowed down significantly in the second half of 2022 in industries exposed to automation.
The report notes that companies in highly exposed industries are re-evaluating their hiring plans due to the onset of generative AI tools. As a result, employment growth has slowed across various sectors, including information and communication services, call centres, software publishing, and advertising.
Specifically, the US witnessed a decline in headcount across information and communication services, dropping below its long-run trend. Similar patterns were observed in Canada and Germany, where call centre employment declined 39% and 33% below trend, respectively.
