Gmail's New Blue Stars Spark Outrage from Users
Google has introduced a visual overhaul to Gmail on the web, replacing its longstanding yellow stars and importance markers with high-contrast blue. The change is aimed at improving accessibility by increasing contrast ratios, but users are unhappy with the new look.
The redesign flattens the visual hierarchy of emails, making it harder for users to distinguish between manually flagged messages (denoted by a star) and algorithmically prioritized ones (denoted by an importance chevron). Both markers now share an identical blue tone that looks visually harsh and clutters the interface.
Users can try to revert to the classic yellow accents by selecting the yellow star preset in Settings, but this will not automatically update already-starred emails. Users will have to un-star and re-star their messages for the change to take effect. Alternatively, users can hide importance chevrons entirely via Settings.
