Goldman Sachs CEO Solomon's Succession Timeline Remains Unclear
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon's potential departure has been discussed by the investment bank's board, but there is no definitive timeline for his succession. According to a Wall Street Journal report, James Waldron, the chief operating officer, has long been seen as a potential successor to Solomon.
However, Tony Fratto, Goldman's global head of communications, stated that 'there is no definitive timeline for succession at Goldman Sachs.' Any assertions about timing are speculative. The board regularly discusses succession, as disclosed in their filings.
Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo said Goldman Sachs' succession has been 'unusually telegraphed,' with Waldron's ascension expected since last year when he was awarded a retention bonus of $80 million. This package is tied to a five-year commitment to the firm, and Solomon received an identical bonus.
Mayo added that Waldron and Solomon have been driving Goldman's priorities together, and any transition would still need to be ratified by the full board. Insiders cautioned that this step could happen within months but is far from certain.
