Google Dials Back Gemini AI Models for Free and Paid Users
Google is making significant changes to its Gemini AI models, affecting users of free and paid accounts. Starting October 9, those on a free account will no longer have access to the Gemini Flash and Pro AI models, leaving only Flash-Lite available for daily conversations.
Paid users on lower plans are also losing some features. Those subscribed to Google AI Plus will no longer have access to the top-spec Pro model but can still use Flash-Lite and standard Flash. If you're currently paying for Plus, expect an email with a personalized timeline explaining when the downgrade takes effect.
The new model breakdown is as follows:
Google AI Plan: Flash-Lite, Flash, No Pro
Google AI Plus: Yes to Flash-Lite and standard Flash, No Pro
Google AI Pro: Yes to all three versions - Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro
Google AI Ultra: Same as Google AI Pro
The changes draw a line between light users and power users. Higher-tier members will retain access to the top models but gain an additional benefit. The Deep Think reasoning engine, previously locked behind the Ultra plan, is now available to Google AI Pro subscribers.
