Google Ditches Gemini Gems for Reusable Skills
Google has announced that it will replace Gemini's Gems feature for personal accounts with a new system called Skills. This change is set to take place on November 17, and users will still be able to use their existing Gems until then.
Gems were introduced by Google in 2024 as a way for users to create custom versions of the Gemini assistant. These custom assistants could perform specific tasks or follow certain writing styles without requiring repetitive instructions from the user.
Skills, on the other hand, are reusable sets of instructions that can be combined with additional context. They will work within Google's Gemini Spark system and can automatically be used when a related task is detected, or activated manually using a slash command.
However, it remains unclear whether all Gems capabilities will transfer directly to Skills. In the meantime, users are advised to save their instructions and source files, then test them on Skills.
