Google Earth Unveils Hidden Rainforest Biodiversity

In 2005, conservation scientist Julian Bayliss stumbled upon a vast Mozambique rainforest on Google Earth while searching for mountainous green areas in northern Mozambique.

The image suggested that Mount Mabu might receive enough rainfall to support an important ecosystem, but the forest was not properly mapped or widely known outside nearby communities.

Bayliss and his colleagues confirmed the discovery after reconnaissance trips to Mount Mabu, revealing a largely untouched rainforest with remarkable biodiversity.
