Google Engineer Sentenced to Nearly a Year for Stealing AI Trade Secrets

A former Google software engineer was sentenced to nearly a year in prison for stealing trade secrets related to artificial intelligence. Linwei Ding, 38, was found guilty of seven counts of theft of proprietary information and economic espionage. The tech giant's AI efforts were compromised when he uploaded over 500 confidential files to a personal cloud account.

Ding's defense argued that the widespread press coverage and his own circumstances would serve as sufficient deterrence against similar actions. However, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria disagreed, stating that a sentence between zero and six months didn't capture the seriousness of Ding's offense.

Chhabria also vacated the espionage conviction in August due to insufficient evidence, but still handed down a harsher sentence than initially requested by Ding's attorneys. In addition to his prison term, Ding will be subject to two years of supervised release and have to pay over $189,000 in restitution, plus a $25,000 fine.
