Google Expands Age Assurance on Google Play with Global Rollout
Google has made its Google Play Age Signals API available to all developers globally. This move is part of the company's efforts to enhance age assurance on its platform, particularly in light of legislative waves around the world.
The API will allow app developers to receive an age range set by parents or guardians of young users, enabling them to tailor content and experiences based on age bands.
The initial rollout of the Google Play Age Signals API will take place in Australia and Canada this month, with a full global rollout expected throughout 2026. Developers are encouraged to design their apps to accommodate declared age bands, as the onus is on parents to enter their child's age range and share it with app developers.
Google emphasizes that its age signals API solves the problem of parents having to manage complex safety settings across multiple apps, allowing children to access age-appropriate content without manual configuration. The company also notes that if no age range signal is available to apps, they must fall back to their own default handling.
