Google Fitbit Edge Leak Reveals New Fitness Tracker Features
Google is reportedly developing the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker designed to bridge the gap between the minimalist Fitbit Air and the more advanced Pixel Watch 5. Leaked retail materials reveal that the device will feature a color display, GPS, an altimeter, and support for Google Maps, notifications, and up to seven days of battery life. The Fitbit Edge is positioned as a more feature-rich alternative to standard fitness trackers, without aiming to replace full-fledged smartwatches.
The leaked images show a compact wristband with a rounded, nearly oval screen, significantly larger than previous Fitbit models. The interface resembles a custom version of the Pixel Watch face, displaying time, date, heart rate, step count, and a quick workout launch button. The back of the device includes a sensor array and a quick-release strap mechanism, with sensors more reminiscent of the Fitbit Air than the Pixel Watch.
Key features of the Fitbit Edge include built-in GPS for tracking routes without a smartphone, an altimeter for measuring elevation changes, and automatic workout recognition. The device also supports Google Maps, music control, Find My Phone, and smartphone notifications. The battery life is advertised at up to seven days, much closer to traditional Fitbits than Wear OS smartwatches. The Fitbit Edge is expected to support both Android and iOS, making it a potential alternative to more expensive smartwatches for iPhone users.
The Fitbit Edge is shown in three colors, black, green, and orange, and features metal inserts on the sides, which may be used for ECG measurements, though this has not been confirmed. The device is likely to be the successor to the Fitbit Charge 6, fitting into Google’s range of wearable devices between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5. Google may unveil the Fitbit Edge as early as October, with an estimated price range of $149-199, though these details have not been officially confirmed.
