Google Launches AI Support Program Amid Decline in Startup Funding
African startups raising between $100,000 and $1 million have seen a significant decline in funding. According to recent data, there were 179 deals in the second half of 2025, but this number dropped to just 100 in the first half of 2026 - a 44% decrease.
This is particularly concerning for early-stage founders who are being squeezed hardest by the changing landscape of AI tooling. It's becoming increasingly challenging for three-person teams to ship products, highlighting the need for innovative solutions and support.
Google has launched an initiative to address this issue, opening applications for the Google Africa Applied AI Lab, a co-development program based at the Accra AI Community Centre and run with the Google AI Futures Fund. Selected teams will receive early access to Google DeepMind models before their general release, as well as hands-on technical mentorship from Google Research and go-to-market support.
The program is conditional and does not guarantee a cash award. However, participating teams may be approached with investment offers, and no equity is required. The program focuses on five themes: the future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity, and entertainment.
