Google, NVIDIA, Emerald AI Unite for Grid-Adaptive AI Data Centers
Google, NVIDIA, and Emerald AI have formed an alliance to develop flexible AI data centers that can adjust their electricity use in response to grid conditions. This collaboration, known as the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), aims to address a major constraint on the expansion of U.S. AI infrastructure: power availability.
NVIDIA notes that traditional interconnection processes were designed for facilities with flat, static electricity demand, not computing infrastructure capable of intelligent responses when the power system is constrained. A flexible data center can adjust its electricity drawn from the grid by shifting computing workloads, discharging storage, using paired generation, or responding to system needs.
The alliance seeks to build AI infrastructure that works with the grid, rather than just connecting to it. This approach has the potential to reduce power consumption and costs for data centers, making them more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
