Google Translate Teams Up with Linguistic Experts to Bring Human Context to AI

On International Translation Day, Google celebrated its contributions to bridging language barriers. The tech giant highlighted three linguists on its team who use human context to ensure translations capture real conversational meaning.

Janneke Van Hofwegen, a User Experience Research Manager at Google, has been passionate about languages since teaching at an international university in Lithuania in 2002. Her Ph.D. from Stanford and co-authored book, 'African American Language: Language Development from Infancy to Adulthood,' demonstrate her expertise.

Isaac Caswell, a Software Engineer at Google Translate, joined the platform in 2017 and has worked on expanding support for digitally under-represented languages. He's added over 100 new languages to the platform, helping speakers of data-scarce languages stay connected.

Harsh Shah, also a Software Engineer, has led the Search translation experience with a focus on solving for linguistic context. By pairing human expertise with AI, he fine-tunes large language models to accurately judge nuance and provide smarter, culturally grounded learning tools.
