Google Unveils Agentic Smart Home Integration with Google Home MCP

Google has introduced a new integration called Google Home MCP (Model Context Protocol) that allows third-party AI agents to control and monitor smart home devices connected to Google Home. This includes tools like Claude, Open Claw, and Google's own Antigravity agent. The integration enables AI agents to access and analyze data from connected devices, allowing for more advanced capabilities such as cross-camera analysis and device state history.

The setup process requires creating a Google Cloud project and configuring it to use the Home MCP. Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest, explained that this integration allows AI agents to securely work with all devices and event history in the Google Home ecosystem.

While this new capability has raised concerns about security and privacy, Google has implemented rate limits and safety protections to prevent potential issues. For example, an agent cannot unlock doors or access sensitive information without explicit permission.

This integration is available only to Google Home Premium Advanced users in the US ($20/month or $200/year) for now, with wider availability expected in the coming weeks.

Google's developer play has been positioning itself as the smart home infrastructure layer. The company launched API access to its smart home in 2024 and made Gemini for Home a full-stack AI offering more recently.
