Google Unveils AlphaGenome Atlas Database with 1-Petabyte of Human Genome Data

The human genome is made up of about 3 billion base pairs of DNA, but much of it remains a mystery. Scientists have a relatively good understanding of the 2% that codes for proteins, but the remaining 98% is still poorly understood.

Google's AlphaGenome model has shown how single changes in non-coding DNA regions can disrupt molecular processes like protein production, but the bigger picture was unclear until now. The new AlphaGenome Atlas database predicts the effects of every possible single nucleotide variant in the human genome, covering all 9 billion possible changes.

The Atlas uses the AVI score to combine predictions for both coding and non-coding regions, allowing researchers to quickly prioritize areas for further study without sifting through thousands of data points. This has already helped scientists accelerate research in areas like rare genomic variations and complex traits.
