Google Wins Patent Dispute Over Internet-Advertising Technology
Alphabet Inc.'s Google has prevailed over AudienceScience in a patent dispute related to internet-advertising technology. On September 25, 2026, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed the dismissal of AudienceScience's lawsuit in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
The court ruled that three patents held by AudienceScience were invalid because they covered an abstract idea not eligible for patenting. The patents in question relate to targeting advertisements to internet users to maximize revenue generation.
Circuit Judge Jimmie V. Reyna wrote for a three-judge panel, stating that the patents 'are directed to an abstract idea' and are thus not patentable.
