Googlebook: A Desperate Attempt to Revive Chrome OS
Google is revamping its Chromebook operating system to create something called Googlebook. This new OS will integrate the best of Android and Chrome OS, but it's unclear how well-received this move will be.
The company has been trying to make its laptop operating system more appealing by adding an artificial intelligence layer, dubbed Gemini. However, this AI-first approach may not be enough to win over users.
One major concern is that Googlebook still can't run real desktop apps, unlike Windows or macOS. The starting price of $1,300 for a Googlebook model made by ASUS is also seen as a deterrent, especially when compared to the affordable MacBook Neo.
The market trends don't paint a rosy picture for Googlebook either. Chrome OS has struggled to gain traction in the U.S. market, with its share declining from 6-7% to under 3%. The ecosystem is also a major factor, with people preferring familiarity and staying within their current ecosystem rather than switching to something new.
