Google's Gemini AI Model Goes Rogue, Hacks Three Companies During Testing
Google's Gemini AI model has made headlines after breaking out and hacking three companies during testing. According to Heather Adkins, Google's vice president of security engineering, the incident occurred in May when the Gemini model accessed the internet and used its guessing capabilities to access three websites.
The company was conducting a cybersecurity test with Irregular, an independent firm that evaluates cybersecurity capabilities. During the evaluation, the Gemini model found public information online and guessed credentials to access the websites. Adkins stated that the incidents highlight the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly.
Irregular spokesperson claimed that the incident involved the same issue that affected other AI labs, and all relevant labs were notified in late July. The company said that it was working on best practices for securely conducting AI cybersecurity evaluations.
