Google's Health Guardian Uses AI to Detect Rising Blood Pressure Trends
Google has introduced a new health monitoring feature called 'Health Guardian' for its Pixel Watch series. The feature includes three health and safety features that use AI to track subtle bodily changes: Vascular Stress Level, Metabolic Stress Level, and Sleep Breathing Quality.
The Vascular Stress Level feature analyzes pulse waveforms flowing beneath the skin on the wrist to monitor for trends indicating a continuous rise in blood pressure. This is significant because high blood pressure often has no subjective symptoms, affecting more than 500 million adults worldwide who are unaware of their rising blood pressure.
If a sustained upward trend in blood pressure is detected over several weeks of analysis, the results are notified in a report delivered on the 1st of every month. The data analysis for Vascular Stress Level utilizes an AI model called 'Waves FM' developed by Google, which interprets pulse speed and complex waveform shapes measured by the Pixel Watch series.
The feature has been rigorously validated by comparing 'Waves FM' with '24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring', a particularly reliable method among blood pressure measurement methods. Users can take concrete actions based on the findings, such as reviewing lifestyle habits or consulting a physician.
