Greenock Campus Transformed into Hyperscale Data Centre Complex
A former IBM data centre campus in Greenock, Scotland is being transformed into a hyperscale-style data centre complex. Slate Island Developments Ltd has submitted a planning application to Inverclyde Council for the project, which includes four data centre buildings covering around 80,000 square meters of floorspace.
The site will also feature new parking areas, landscaping, and sustainable drainage systems, while retaining most of the perimeter woodland. The development is tied to a separate Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) scheme, indicating that it may require grid reinforcement due to high electrical demand in the future.
The brownfield status of the site should reduce the amount of earthworks required for construction, but legacy foundations and services need to be verified before work can begin. The developer cites the large contiguous previously developed area as a key factor in the suitability of the site for redevelopment.
