Healthcare Stocks Hiding in Plain Sight: Warning Signs for OPCH, ILMN, and MRK
Healthcare stocks have been on a tear lately, with many investors rewarding companies that are driving better patient outcomes. However, not all healthcare stocks are created equal, and some may be hiding warning signs.
Take Option Care Health (OPCH), the largest independent provider of home and alternate site infusion services in the US. With a nationwide network of 177 locations serving 43 states and a team of over 4,500 clinicians, Option Care has been delivering medications and clinical support to patients across the country.
However, its estimated sales growth of 4.3% for the next 12 months implies that demand will slow from its two-year trend, raising concerns about its future prospects. Additionally, its free cash flow margin was stuck in limbo over the last five years, and returns on capital haven't budged, indicating management couldn't drive additional value creation.
At $23.91 per share, Option Care Health trades at 12.1x forward P/E, making it a stock to avoid for now.
Illumina (ILMN) is another healthcare stock that may be due for a correction. The company has been pioneering the ability to read the human genome at unprecedented speed and affordability, but its organic revenue growth fell short of benchmarks over the past two years, implying it may need to improve its products, pricing, or go-to-market strategy.
Illumina is trading at $248.83 per share, or 41.9x forward P/E, making it a pricey stock that may not be worth the investment.
Finally, Merck (MRK) has been struggling with underwhelming constant currency revenue performance over the past two years, suggesting its product offering at current prices doesn't resonate with customers.
