Home Depot's Rental Rip-Off: Man Charged Over $1,100 for Returned Equipment
A Wake Forest man was charged over $1,100 by Home Depot for rental equipment he had already returned. Gordon Caviness rented an auger from the store for a project at a relative's home and received a receipt showing he had the equipment for less than four hours.
Caviness said he finished the project three hours and 45 minutes early and was even given a $15.47 credit for returning the equipment early, but he didn't think about the rental again until he noticed a charge on his bank card.
He contacted Home Depot and was told the rental equipment had been returned, and the charge was an error due to a 'recovery fee' initiated by their computer system. However, despite being assured that the issue would be corrected, Caviness continued to receive multiple charges for the same equipment over several weeks.
After contacting ABC11's Troubleshooter Diane Wilson, Home Depot quickly responded and worked directly with Caviness to resolve the issue and provide a full refund.
