IBM Defies Industry Trend by Expanding into Tier-2 Cities in India
IBM's expansion into tier-2 cities in India is a bold move against the trend of tech companies reassessing smaller centers. According to Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India & South Asia, this decision was driven by four key factors: diversification of location concentration, access to talent, building vibrant IT ecosystems, and work-life balance.
The company has found meaningful talent in regional engineering and technical colleges, and by expanding into tier-2 cities, they can tap into this pool. Additionally, business partners are moving to these locations, providing opportunities for co-creation and co-development. The company is also creating AI GovTech Centres of Excellence with local governments, such as the one in Lucknow.
Patel emphasizes that work-life balance is a significant advantage of tier-2 cities, where employees can live closer to their workplaces and enjoy a better quality of life compared to metros like Bengaluru or Mumbai. Many employees are also returning to their hometowns, which presents opportunities for IBM to tap into local talent.
IBM's strategy is centered on hybrid cloud, AI, and delivering these capabilities with a strong sense of security. The company has introduced Lightwell, a vulnerability solution that has received significant interest from customers in the US and India. Patel notes that the response to Lightwell has been 'nothing short of amazing,' with several large banks and organizations already signed up.
