IBM has been awarded a $1 billion U.S. research-and-development (R&D) grant from the U.S. Commerce Department to build the country's first quantum microchip foundry.

Anderon, an IBM subsidiary, will operate as the newly formed company after the chip foundry is operational, and IBM has pledged $1 billion U.S. of its own money to support it.

The R&D grant is part of a push by the U.S. government to onshore microchip manufacturing and advance technologies related to quantum computing and artificial intelligence (A.I.).
