IBM Nails Cryogenic Module Integration for Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing
IBM has achieved a crucial milestone in its quest for fault-tolerant quantum computing. The company successfully linked two cryogenic modules, which are essential components of its upcoming IBM Quantum Starling system. This achievement paves the way for IBM to meet its goal of delivering a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
The integration and cooling of the two modules reached as low as 4 Kelvin in under five days, and then dropped below 15 millikelvin shortly after. This is more than 180 times colder than deep space. The setup measures over 8 feet tall and wide, with each module's vacuum enclosure providing up to 12 times more wiring space than IBM's current quantum systems.
The design change allows for a higher density of chip-to-chip connections within individual modules and across linked modules. This is made possible by the use of L-couplers, which connect separate quantum chips to enable them to exchange information and function together as part of a larger quantum computer.
