IBM Sees Rebound After Second-Quarter Software Shortfall
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company fell short in executing its second-quarter software sales, but expressed confidence in the future. The shortfall was mainly due to a shift in customer spending towards AI-focused hardware components and cybersecurity software.
During the Q2 earnings call, Krishna pointed out that IBM witnessed a significant shift in client spending priorities at the end of June, with customers favoring servers, storage, and memory purchases to secure supply-constrained infrastructure ahead of expected price increases. This led to IBM missing its sales targets for certain large deals.
Krishna stated that about one-third of the shifted deals had already closed since the earnings call, giving a positive indication that it was a deferral rather than a destruction of business.
The CEO emphasized that IBM's conviction in the strength of its business and ability to grow remains unchanged. He highlighted plans to increase AI usage for scaling software development, bolstering sales and marketing efforts, and optimizing supply chains.
