IBM to Boost Quantum Computing and Cloud Investments in India
IBM is set to expand its investments in quantum computing and cloud infrastructure across India, according to Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw. The announcement came after a meeting with senior IBM officials, underscoring the company's commitment to India's advanced technology sectors. Vaishnaw highlighted that IBM will strengthen its design teams in India, particularly in advanced semiconductor nodes, creating new opportunities for the country's tech talent.
Quantum computing leverages quantum mechanics to process information using qubits, which can exist as both 0 and 1 simultaneously. This technology can solve complex problems faster than traditional computers and has applications in drug discovery, financial modeling, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. IBM's investments reflect growing global confidence in India's technology capabilities and skilled workforce.
During the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Vaishnaw met with IBM CEO Arvind Krishna and Meta Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan. Discussions focused on social media safety, including concerns about deepfakes and AI-generated content. Meta briefed the minister on its efforts to protect users from such risks.
The collaboration with IBM will also bolster India's efforts in advanced chip technology, including 7 nm and 2 nm semiconductor nodes. This partnership aims to develop India's semiconductor talent pool and support the country's ambition to become a major hub for advanced semiconductor design and technology.
