Nvidia-Backed Startup Launches Beam AI to Rival Chinese Models
A US AI startup backed by Nvidia has unveiled its new Beam AI model, positioning it as a strong competitor to leading open-weight models, particularly those developed by Chinese firms. Beam stands out with 501 billion parameters but operates efficiently by leveraging only 23 billion per task, making it significantly more cost-effective than alternatives from Alibaba and Z.ai.
Open-weight models from China have previously disrupted the AI industry, with Deepseek-R1 in 2025 and Kimi-K3 in 2026 challenging established models at lower costs. Beam's approach could be particularly beneficial for AI teams in the Middle East, offering flexibility to run models on selected hardware. However, its real-world usefulness will depend on access to the model's weights and sufficient computing power.
Reflection, the Nvidia-backed startup behind Beam, claims that their model is competitive with GLM 5.2 from Z.ai and nearly matches the performance of Qwen 3.8-Max for coding tasks. Beam's efficiency comes from its "mixture-of-experts" method, which distributes workloads through specialized networks, reducing the need for extensive computational resources. This makes Beam around twice as efficient as GLM 5.2 and far cheaper to run.
The startup, founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers, has raised over $4 billion, with $800 million coming from Nvidia. Other investors include Sequoia Capital, Disruptive, and 1789 Capital. While Beam's availability and pricing in the Middle East remain unconfirmed, its potential as an open-weight model is notable for regional AI teams.
