JPMorgan Chase & Co has once again claimed the top spot in the global AI banking index, strengthening its lead over competitors. The annual ranking, published by Evident AI Index on Tuesday, highlights the rapid acceleration of AI adoption across the banking industry. Capital One Financial Corp and Royal Bank of Canada maintained their second and third positions, respectively, while Commonwealth Bank of Australia remained in fourth place as the only Asia-Pacific lender in the top 10. UBS Group AG, at sixth place, stands as the sole European bank in the top leagues. DBS Group Holdings Ltd, Southeast Asia’s largest bank, secured the 25th position.

The Evident AI Index evaluates how global lenders are transforming their substantial AI investments into tangible results. With mounting pressure to justify record tech budgets and concerns about AI’s impact on jobs, banks that fail to demonstrate returns risk stagnation in their AI programs. Alexandra Mousavizadeh, Evident’s co-founder and co-CEO, noted that top-performing banks are expanding their workforce, suggesting a potential surge in job creation. "Roles are changing, and some are not being backfilled, but the banks at the top of our Index are growing, and growing headcount," she stated.

Across the 50 banks assessed, AI capabilities improved nearly three times faster over the past year compared to the average of the previous three years, marking the fastest pace since the index began in 2023. Leading banks are leveraging AI-driven productivity gains to expand their businesses and enhance efficiencies. For instance, Wells Fargo & Co has trained AI agents on 15 years of loan decisions to streamline the process, with underwriters making the final decisions. Banks are also focusing on hiring AI talent, particularly in roles that accelerate the deployment of the technology and redesign workflows.

AI enablement roles, which facilitate the adoption of AI tools and workflow redesigns, saw a 21% increase over the past year, the fastest growth among AI job categories. Meanwhile, data engineering roles declined by 3%, and other roles like AI development and AI software implementation grew at a much slower pace. The index scores institutions based on their AI talent, research and patent activity, leadership communications, and transparency around AI deployment. For JPMorgan, this marks the bank’s fifth consecutive year at the top.
