Kenya Joins Sub-Saharan Africa in Alimatravir Production
Kenya has joined South Africa and Uganda in the production of alimatravir, an investigational oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) pill. The once-monthly pill is currently undergoing Phase 3 trials, which include a study evaluating its safety and effectiveness for adolescent girls and young women in the three countries.
Merck has selected Universal Corporation Limited (UCL), a Kenyan pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Kikuyu, to prepare for production. If approved, alimatravir could provide an alternative to daily oral PrEP, which can be difficult for some individuals to maintain.
The potential price of the monthly pill is around $5 per year's supply, although final pricing will depend on development, regulatory approval, and access arrangements. President William Ruto has welcomed the development, stating that greater local manufacturing would help Africa reduce dependence on imported medicines and strengthen health security.
