LG Electric Range Lawsuit Alleges Defective Controls Caused $140k House Fire

A California property insurance program is suing LG Electronics and Home Depot over an electric range that allegedly caused a house fire. The California Fair Plan alleges the LG LSEL633D/00 electric range's front-mounted control system was defective, allowing a heating element to activate unexpectedly on February 21, 2025.

The fire resulted in more than $140,000 in property damage, according to the complaint filed by California Fair Plan in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The insurer claims LG knew or should have known about the risk posed by the front-mounted controls and failed to disable or replace affected appliances.

The lawsuit mirrors concerns raised by a February 2025 LG recall, which involved over 500,000 slide-in and freestanding ranges with front-mounted knobs. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall after receiving at least 86 reports of unintentional activation involving LG range controls.
