Lufthansa Flight Diverts to Manchester Due to Burning Odour on Board

Lufthansa flight LH470 from Frankfurt to Toronto was diverted to Manchester on September 26 due to a burning odour on board. The Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVY, declared a general emergency over Scotland and landed safely at Manchester after being in the air for just under two hours.

The aircraft was about 180 nautical miles north of Manchester when the crew made the sudden left turn to declare an emergency. The passengers reported a burning smell, flickering lavatory lights, and one in-flight entertainment screen losing power. However, Lufthansa has not confirmed these reports or published any cause for the diversion.

The aircraft was still carrying most of its fuel for an Atlantic crossing, so it had to land well above the normal landing weight. Fire crews checked the brakes and landing gear after the plane stopped on a taxiway.
