Mangione Pleads Guilty in Federal Case Over UnitedHealth CEO Slaying
Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to federal charges of stalking and killing Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealth Group's insurance unit. Mangione admitted in court that he fatally shot Thompson in Manhattan on December 4, 2024, and acknowledged navigating obstacles with his insurance after suffering a broken back.
Mangione wore beige prison garb and spoke calmly as he read from a prepared statement criticizing the US health insurance system. He claimed to have emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership seeking details of its 2024 investor conference, pretending to be an investor managing more than $50 billion in assets.
The federal guilty plea will likely lead to Mangione's lawyers filing a motion to dismiss separate state murder and weapons charges under New York's double jeopardy law. Prosecutors will seek a sentence of life in prison at his sentencing on December 18.
