McDonald's Shares Plummet on $8.5 Billion Franchisee Support Plan
McDonald's shares plummeted by as much as 6.5% on Friday to $234.03, their lowest level in nearly four years. The stock closed at $238.32, down 4.81%, with over 13.8 million shares changing hands, more than three times the 20-day average.
The sharp decline was triggered by McDonald's announcement of an $8.5 billion franchisee support plan, which will be distributed through 2036. The company plans to provide approximately $5 billion in support through 2030 via a combination of rent relief and capital investments.
Investors are concerned about the timing of this investment, as the benefits from restaurant upgrades, technology, and operational improvements are expected to develop over several years.
