Merck's Remigromig Trials Yield Promising Results in Diabetic Macular Edema Treatment

Pharmaceutical company Merck has announced promising results in its clinical trial of Remigromig, an experimental injection for diabetic macular edema. The condition is a complication of diabetes that causes vision loss due to damaged retinal blood vessels leaking fluid into the macula.

The 52-week trial involved 984 patients with diabetic macular edema and found that Remigromig met the main goal by achieving the required standard for change in visual acuity. The treatment was also non-inferior to Roche's established therapy, ranibizumab.

Remigromig is designed to activate the Wnt pathway, which plays a role in cell growth and repair, to help restore the protective lining of blood vessels in the retina and reduce fluid leakage. Analysts believe it could offer a new approach to treating retinal vascular diseases if approved.
