Microsoft Drops Copilot+ Branding from Surface PCs Amid NPU Ubiquity
Microsoft has quietly phased out its Copilot+ branding from new Surface PCs, marking a shift in how users identify AI-capable devices. The company's decision comes as local AI processing (NPU) becomes increasingly ubiquitous across laptops and tablets.
In an interview with Windows Central, Surface Corporate Vice President Brett Ostrum explained that the purpose of Copilot+ PCs was to deliver specific experiences. As NPUs have become more widespread, users will now need to check spec sheets instead of relying on branding for confirmation.
NVIDIA's latest RTX Spark PCs also meet the minimum NPU requirements but lack the Copilot+ branding, suggesting that Microsoft may not be alone in abandoning this label.
