Microsoft Patents AI That Rewrites Game Story on the Fly
Microsoft has filed a patent for an artificial intelligence system that can generate and modify a video game's story in real-time while players are engaged. The AI would analyze player behavior, interactions with non-player characters (NPCs), and gameplay to create new content such as quests, dialogue, and story events.
The proposed system uses a feedback loop where the AI generates content based on player behavior and folds it back into the game experience. This approach moves beyond traditional branching narrative, where every possible outcome is scripted in advance. Instead, players' choices could prompt the system to generate material that did not exist before they triggered it.
The patent also describes the AI as a development tool, allowing designers to use natural-language prompts to prototype characters, worlds, and quests before a game ships. Microsoft views players as co-creators of the game experience, with their behavior helping determine what narrative content is generated next.
