Microsoft Redirects $5M Incentive in Mount Pleasant

Microsoft will redirect its development incentive of up to $5 million per year in Mount Pleasant, Village officials announced. The money was agreed upon as part of a 2023 development agreement between Microsoft and the Village.

The Racine County Economic Development Corporation (RCEDC) would receive the $5 million first, keeping about $100,000 for countywide work and sending the other $4.9 million to the Village. The Village Board will decide how to spend it when it approves its 2027 budget.

According to Village Communications Director Sean Ryan, the $4.9 million is an annual amount and the first incentive payment Microsoft is eligible to receive. What's more, this move ties into Microsoft's Community-First AI Infrastructure initiative, which includes a commitment to forgo local property tax incentives, as stated in January.

Village officials say they plan to use the money to keep tax bills stable while maintaining services and pay for capital costs like rebuilding roads or buying police and fire vehicles without borrowing. The release also mentions that taxpayers will benefit immediately and continue to do so for years to come due to Microsoft's data centers.
