Microsoft Taps Usage-Based Billing for Copilot to Monetize AI
Microsoft has introduced usage-based billing for its Copilot suite, adding an extra charge on top of the existing $30-per-seat license. This move applies to Home, Code, and Autopilot features within Copilot, which currently sees adoption in fewer than 7% of Microsoft's 450 million commercial Office 365 seats.
The shift to usage-based billing is a sign of AI-driven SaaS products maturing, allowing vendors to capture incremental value from heavy users. This change creates a clearer cost-to-value link for enterprise operators and forces competitors to reconsider their pricing strategies, especially as AI agents become core workflow components.
Jacob Andreou, EVP for Copilot, stated that the company is 'holding a very high bar' on output quality, suggesting that the firm is prioritizing performance. The new Code tool has been praised by David McLaren of GHD for its ease of use, even for non-developers.
