Microsoft's Abandoned Digital Ownership Plans Have Finally Come to Fruition

Microsoft's vision for the Xbox One in 2011 was ambitious and forward-thinking. The company explored true digital ownership, including features like digital gifting and the ability to recycle digital games. However, these plans were ultimately scrapped due to significant backlash surrounding the console's launch in 2013.

The ideas may have been abandoned, but some of the underlying technology and concepts survived. Microsoft introduced unique identifiers for Xbox game discs that could be read by consoles, which has now enabled the disc-to-digital feature. This allows owners of certain physical games to insert a compatible disc into an Xbox console with a disc drive and obtain a digital version of the game.

Fast forward to 2023, Microsoft has introduced Xbox disc to digital licensing, giving Xbox Insiders a new way to access supported games without keeping the physical disc inserted. This feature applies to eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, and once claimed, the game can be accessed without having the disc inserted.
