mRNA Melanoma Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Phase 3 Trial
A groundbreaking Phase 3 trial has yielded promising results for an mRNA melanoma vaccine developed by Intismeran in collaboration with Merck and Moderna. The trial, which enrolled 1,137 high-risk patients with stage 2b to 4 melanoma that had been surgically removed, found that the personalized vaccine combined with Keytruda (Merck's immunotherapy drug) significantly reduced melanoma recurrence and metastasis compared to Keytruda alone.
The trial's primary and secondary endpoints were met, showing improved recurrence-free survival in patients receiving the combination treatment. According to Professor Georgina Long, principal investigator of the study, the results represent a 'landmark moment' for adjuvant melanoma treatment.
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel described the achievement as 'a big moment for medicine, a big moment for patients.' The companies plan to present their findings at an upcoming medical meeting and share them with regulatory agencies in the next few months. However, some experts caution that more data is needed to fully understand the treatment's benefits.
