Musk Unleashes AI Compute Surge at SpaceX
Elon Musk's AI computing expansion is gaining momentum at SpaceX. The company plans to more than double its current number of Nvidia chips by year-end, adding to its existing infrastructure. Colossus 2, currently running 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300s, will receive an additional 220,000 GB300s next week, followed by another 220,000 in November. Musk hinted that a further 220,000 GB300s could come online by late December if everything goes smoothly.
This expansion would bring Colossus 2 to roughly 1.21 million Nvidia GB200 and GB300 chips, making it one of the most aggressively scaled AI infrastructure builders in the industry. The buildout is significant because xAI is already operating Colossus 1 with a substantial number of Nvidia H100s, H200s, and GB200s.
The expansion matters for Nvidia investors as well, as hundreds of thousands of additional GB300 chips could be installed within only a few months. This reinforces Nvidia's position at the center of frontier AI infrastructure spending.
