Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has joined a growing debate over artificial intelligence (AI) safety, governance, and geopolitical competition. In a recent post on X, Nadella expressed support for a more measured pace of AI development, emphasizing the importance of human control while ensuring broad access to the technology's benefits.

Nadella's comments come after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing down the development of frontier AI, citing concerns about safety and alignment. Amodei proposed independent evaluators, coordination among companies in democratic countries, and eventually international cooperation. He warned that recursive self-improvement could accelerate progress beyond researchers' ability to evaluate risks.

Beijing has rejected Amodei's call for continued restrictions on China's access to advanced AI chips and semiconductor equipment. Chinese officials argued that confrontation and competition between major powers would undermine efforts to establish global AI governance.
