Nadella Takes Lead in CEO Comparison as Azure Surpasses $100 Billion
The comparison between Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella as CEOs is challenging due to their companies' fundamentally different businesses. Meta Platforms (META) under Zuckerberg and Microsoft (MSFT) under Nadella share similarities, including advertising-and-cloud franchises with elite margins. Both are aggressively investing in AI infrastructure.
A closer look at the metrics reveals that Microsoft leads Meta on return on invested capital (ROIC), return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), and operating margin. Although the gap is narrow, Microsoft's lower debt-to-equity ratio means Nadella is generating returns with a leaner balance sheet.
However, Meta absorbed significant legal charges and severance in Q2 FY26, while Microsoft marked up AI stakes, contributing to the operating-margin gap. Despite this, Meta's advertising engine remains strong, with revenue growing 28% to $60.8B and ad revenue increasing 27% to $59B.
Nadella's success can be attributed to Azure's growth of 43%, crossing $100B in full-year revenue, and Microsoft Cloud reaching $59.3B. The company also saw a significant increase in commercial remaining performance obligation, rising 84% to $678B.
