SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft will retire by 2030, ending their nearly two-decade run of carrying astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

NASA plans to use Boeing's Starliner spacecraft to fill this gap. The space agency will pay Boeing $359 million extra to help fix problems with Starliner, which has struggled in its initial flights.

The first uncrewed flight of Starliner is expected to take place either in December 2026 or January 2027, followed by a crewed mission to the ISS in mid-2028. If successful, this could pave the way for more flights and potentially even commercial space stations.

NASA's decision to support Boeing's Starliner program marks a significant reversal of fortune for the aerospace giant. Boeing has already received over $5 billion from NASA for the Starliner program, despite its troubled history.
