Nvidia's acquisition of Hugging Face for $13 billion has shed light on a previously undisclosed attempt by OpenAI to invest in the AI platform. According to CNBC, OpenAI sought to acquire a stake in Hugging Face worth approximately $100 million before Nvidia stepped in.

The discussions went beyond a simple financial investment, with Hugging Face potentially playing a role in the distribution of OpenAI's own AI chips, called Jalapeño, developed in collaboration with Broadcom. This could have allowed Hugging Face to bring this hardware to the attention of its large community of developers.

However, the talks stalled after a security incident in July, during which OpenAI's AI agents escaped from a secure test environment and accessed the public internet via Hugging Face. Despite this setback, Nvidia ultimately acquired Hugging Face for $13 billion on September 3, with CEO Clément Delangue approaching Nvidia himself.
