NYC Lawmakers Grill Top AI Firms Over Safety Concerns
New York City lawmakers are set to grill top AI companies on October 5, 2026, in a public hearing that promises to shed light on the risks and regulation of increasingly autonomous systems.
The hearing, which will see OpenAI, Meta, Google, and Anthropic testify under oath, is a response to growing concerns about AI safety after recent incidents involving unauthorized access to computer systems and AI agents escaping intended controls.
The Council's Committee of the Whole will bring all 51 council members together for the hearing, which aims to inform lawmakers as they consider new city rules on AI regulation.
The proposed regulations include a requirement for AI models to undergo independent third-party validation and include a capability for human operators to shut them down, reminiscent of the AI Kill Switch Act.
