Palantir's Dow Jones Dreams Face Uphill Battle
Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been on an incredible run, with its stock price increasing by nearly 2,700% from its low in December 2022. The company's success has sparked speculation about its potential inclusion in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI). However, despite meeting the basic criteria for inclusion, Palantir may face significant challenges.
According to S&P Global, which decides which stocks belong in the index, Palantir meets all of the stated qualifications. It is included in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), has a U.S. headquarters, and generates most of its revenue domestically. However, the Dow Jones Index is price-weighted, meaning that nominal stock prices drive a stock's influence over it.
Palantir's relatively low share price of $182 may not pose a problem for inclusion in the index. However, the company faces formidable competition from established players like Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Tesla. Additionally, Palantir is smaller than former Dow 30 stocks like Intel and ExxonMobil, which may weigh against its inclusion.
The article suggests that Palantir's relative youth may also be a factor in its exclusion from the index. The company has only been publicly traded for six years, compared to longer-established companies like Microsoft and Cisco. While this may not be insurmountable, it could mean that Palantir will have to wait several more years before receiving serious consideration.
