Pancreatic Cancer Claims Life of James F. Borden, Benchrest Shooting Legend
James Fay Borden, affectionately known as Jim or Jimmy, passed away on September 27, 2026, at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on March 4, 1951, to Joseph Roy and Betty Mae Hammond Borden, Jim grew up on North Road in the village of Holliday, where he was taught the value of family, tradition, and hands-on learning from an early age.
At 10 years old, Jim started a paper route and worked in his family's business, J. P. Borden and Son, which included auto repair, sporting goods, appliances, machining, and gunsmithing.
Jim earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University on March 24, 1973, and began working at Charmin Paper Products (later Procter & Gamble) as a maintenance manager. He later founded Borden Accuracy (also known as Borden Rifles), bringing together his engineering expertise and lifelong passion for shooting.
Jim was an accomplished benchrest competitor, winning 11 national championships and setting 10 world records. He served multiple terms as president of International Benchrest Shooters and was inducted into the United States Benchrest Shooting Hall of Fame in May 1997.
