Pioneer in Hospital Computer Systems William Joseph Carretta Passes Away
William Joseph Carretta Sr., a distinguished figure in the technology and healthcare industries, passed away on March 19, 2016, at the age of 72. Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Arlington, VA, Carretta earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. He began his career at IBM before being commissioned as an Army Captain, where he installed the first computers in military hospitals.
After his military service, Carretta moved to Mountain View, California, and worked for Lockheed, becoming one of the early pioneers in developing software for hospital computer systems. He furthered his education by obtaining an MBA and a doctor of law degree from the University of Santa Clara. Carretta later founded and served as President of Micro-Med Systems for 35 years.
Carretta is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary, his children Catherine Swenston, Bill Carretta Jr., and Juliana Carretta, as well as his grandchildren and extended family. Known for his generosity and humility, Carretta was deeply involved in his community and church. A Funeral Mass was held on March 31, 2016, at Star of the Valley Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, with donations requested for Catholic Charities in his memory.
